Kashish - Formed in 1996, with a vision of one man's (Sanjay Gupta) goal to form a funky pop band that would break the barriers of race, religion and culture. Although he started as a solo singer, but deep down, he'd dream of having his own band and not just a band, but a talented group of individual from different walks of life. These musicians, gifted with knowledge and experience bring along their unique personalities. This dynamic combination led to hip shaking, Mac Daddy explosion of a band called Kashish (APPEAL).
What better place to define cultural diversity than the backdrop of New York City. Although their music is catered for the Indian market, they continuously infuse their music with flavors of Techno, Reggae & Calypso. Not to be repetitive, they also experiment with new sounds and format.
A typical live show is by far typical - one night you'll find them performing Filmi, Bhangra, Reggae tunes and other night you'll catch them performing soft romantic Ghazal tunes. It is their audience really sets the tone and tempo for the type of music that they will perform that evening. Whether its a Dance Party or a Ghazal Mehfil, they will sure to thrill and amuse their audience.

MEET THE BAND

Jerry Lackhan: An extremely versatile musician on Indian Percussion and Drums. He hails from the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago in the West Indies. Born into a large family, he started off playing music for Mala Sangeet Orchestra in Trinidad. He currently resides in the Woodhaven section of Queens, New York. His natural ability to grasp and execute intricate rhythms on the fly is what puts him past the competition.

Kailash Singh: Originally from Crabwood Corentine in Guyana, he specializes on the Dholak. After playing for 7 years he is now force to reckon with. He lives in Long Island, NY apart from bring a veteran of the US Armed Forces recently returning from Bosnia. He enjoys contemporary and old Hindi film songs apart from reggae and hip-hop.

Suresh Ketwaroe: He is from Suriname, in South America. Apart for being an exceptional guitarist he is also influenced by various styles of music like reggae, calypso etc. He lives in Queens, NY.

Steven Perumalla: He is from Hyderabad, India. He specializes on the Tabla and possesses a Masters in classical music. Now he resides in Brooklyn, NY.

Dave Moran: A new member of Kashish, Dave who is also a lead guitarist plays Bass Guitar with the band. Originally from Irish descent Dave has remarkably developed an aptitude for Indian film songs. He lives in Manhattan, NY.

Nawed Khan: Composer, Lyricist, Keyboardist and Computer whiz by large, he also lives in Queens NY although from Karachi, Pakistan. He is intrigued by all forms of modern technology including samplers, MIDI, Internet etc. He is also the creator of this web-site for Kashish.

Ashwini Naidu: One of the two founding members of Kashish. Apart from playing Keyboards, Guitar and Bass he also possesses deep knowledge in the field of sequencing and digital hard disk recording. Originally from Madras, India he now resides in Queens, NY.

Sanjay Gupta: The buck stops here! He is the lead vocalist and founder of Kashish. He has been in Queens, NY for over twenty years. Vocally he has a natural apt for songs of the legendary Kishore Kumar. He hopes to make his singing a full time profession in the near future. He also has a degree in marketing and management.

As for the future, a variety of musical projects are in the works. Apart from live performances a strong emphasis will be laid on creating original compositions. They aspire to compete in the Asian pop music scene. This band will continue to strive to promote Indian culture and art through their music.
